Do you have a lot of unfinished projects?
Craft projects, books you started to write but didn’t finish books you started to read but never finished, or remodeling projects?
Having unfinished projects can drain your energy.
Do you ever wonder, What the heck” Why are so many things unfinished?
Maybe you get inspired but at some point, something happens, and the project is not done but you just don't feel like continuing.
Let’s take a closer look at these moments and analyzed what has happened.
When I am creating crafty things, the joy for me is in the process. The doing, the feelings the choices of color or texture, and when it is finished, I usually give it away, sometimes I sell it and sometimes I toss it in the trash. But if it goes unfinished usually, one of three things has happened,
1: Inspiration left, and I didn’t love what I was doing enough to carry on with it. Inspiration is this cooky friend who whispers in your ear “let’s try this” or sometimes it shouts. But it doesn’t promise to hang out with you until the end, sometimes it leaves and if you still find passion within you to continue, you do.
2: You let the voice of perfectionism and/or comparison into your head. I believe perfection and comparison are cousins and those two are jerks that come along and try to make you feel that you and whatever you are working on is not enough, not original, not the best out there, and they can destroy if you let them. They will kill dreams and projects by feeding your fears.
3: You started it because someone else wanted you to, or expected you to, or thought you would be good at it.
Basically, you are trying to please someone, not creating, or doing because it brings you joy, but because of expectations placed on you.
Honestly, when I have given into this with a project, I really don’t like whatever I create and sometimes develop resentment towards the person who pushed it. I learned long ago to just say no to these ideas no matter what fame and fortune are promised and choose to save the relationship by having an honest conversation with the person.
Now, I have noticed that I have a few unfinished projects just sitting around or hidden in the closet, slowly draining my energy.
So, I have chosen to dig them out and ask do I want to finish this, will working on this fill me with joy? If the answer is yes, I schedule the time to do it and if the answer is no, then I get rid of it.
